Disney’s ‘Win or Lose’: Did Pixar Just Lose a Transgender Storyline?

Disney removed a transgender storyline from Pixar’s animated series “Win or Lose.” The storyline showed a young transgender girl named Jess trying to find her place on her school’s co-ed baseball team.

“Win or Lose” and its Significance:

• Firstly, “Win or Lose” is a big deal because it’s Pixar’s first TV show with many episodes. Therefore, cutting the story about Jess is even more disappointing. Unfortunately, it might mean that Pixar will do this again in future shows.
  Secondly, the show is about a middle school softball team. Consequently, this was a perfect chance to show a transgender character and help people understand what it’s like to be trans. Furthermore, it would have helped trans kids feel seen and understood.
  Finally, we don’t know how cutting Jess’s story will change the show. Perhaps her character will still be interesting, but it’s sad that we won’t see her story as a trans girl.

Disney’s History of LGBTQ+ Content Removal:

• A tiny moment in “Onward”: The movie “Onward” showed a very quick scene with a kiss between two women. Disney removed the scene, upsetting many people. They felt Disney was pretending to be inclusive instead of truly telling LGBTQ+ stories.
  More examples: Disney has a history of this behavior. They have removed or altered LGBTQ+ characters in other movies and shows. Research to find more examples. This proves Disney doesn’t fully support LGBTQ+ stories.
  What people want: People want more than brief appearances from LGBTQ+ characters. They want to see these characters play essential roles in the story. They want characters whose LGBTQ+ identity is a natural part of who they are, not something hidden or erased.

My Opinion:

I am disappointed that Disney has removed the transgender storyline from “Win or Lose.” This is a missed opportunity to create a positive and inclusive representation of transgender people in children’s media. I hope that Disney will reconsider its decision and allow the storyline to be included in the series.
